Reel Affirmations & One in Ten [ + ]

In 1990, Keith Haring died of AIDS. So did Ryan White. The previous year, Alvin Ailey and Robert Mapplethorpe had died. ACT UP led demonstrations against the Reagan Administration's AIDS policy. Gay rights? They were "special rights." Forget about it.
It seems so long ago, and maybe even painful to remember: nearly every day LGBT people faced grim news on some front.
In that time of anger and grief, One In Ten was formed, born from the frustration of LGBT struggles, but also the hope that an educational and arts organization would bring a positive message about being gay and lesbian to the public. In 1991, it produced its first program, a film festival that instantly became a powerful center of LGBT affinity and pride. Who knew there were so many LGBT films and LGBT people in DC? Who knew there'd be interest in LGBT lives from all of Washington? And in those early years, who'd have predicted that Reel Affirmations would grow to be annually the largest LGBT arts event in DC?
Since its first festival, Reel Affirmations has grown to include a companion Pride Film Festival, special screenings throughout the year with a variety of community partnerships, and a grant program to support LGBT filmmakers. Meanwhile, its parent organization, One In Ten, was a producer of the community Pride for several years, presents nights of comedy and supports other arts projects that help tell the stories of LGBT lives.

One In Ten's Mission Statement

One In Ten is dedicated to education and cultural activism on behalf of gay and lesbian people. One In Ten seeks to nurture the aesthetics, consciousness, and cultural legacy of this community.
One In Ten is a non-profit 501(c)(3) membership-based organization. One In Ten is non-partisan, non-sectarian, and respects the diversity of backgrounds and ideologies of members of the gay and lesbian community.

Lisa holds an MBA in International Finance from The George Washington University and provides financial consulting for both the corporate and non-profit sector.
She has held finance positions at PricewaterhouseCoopers, US Patent and Trademark Office, Fannie Mae and Lockheed Martin.
She was born in San Diego, CA in 1971 and moved to the Washington Metropolitan area in 1989. She is active in the historic preservation of her tiny section of Washington’s Shaw community called Hell’s Bottom, which includes such jewels as the Howard Theatre. In 2000, Lisa’s volunteer and entrepreneurial spirit contributed to the National Trust for Historic Preservation designating the Howard Theatre as the Nation’s 500th Treasure in their Save America’s Treasures program.  She has been a resident of Shaw since 1995, where she is renovating a Victorian row house with her partner Polly.

Vice President
Ramon is the Chief of Customer Service for the D.C. Department of Human Resources. He and his partner of almost 12 years, Charles Chesson, reside in Chevy Chase, MD.
Ramon joined the One In Ten board in 2006, and currently serves as Vice President. Additionally, he serves on the board of the Family Services Agency, an Enoch Pratt affiliate located in Gaithersburg, MD, and is energetically involved with Equality Maryland, Maryland’s largest LGBT civil rights group. Ramon has been an active member of the Screen Actor’s Guild since 1985 and has appeared in national English and Spanish language national commercials, television shows, films as well as stage.

Courtney is a Deputy Assistant Director at the Office of Management and Budget, helping to oversee an amazing staff of 60. Previously at OMB, she was the lead analyst overseeing policy and guidance to Federal agencies on budgeting for long-term credit losses. She has 17 years of experience in finance and budgeting, a master of public policy degree from the University of Southern California, and a B.A. in political science from Barnard College, Columbia University.  Her right-brained activities include a love of playing and watching sports, cooking (and eating), independent films, and writing.

Scott joined the One In Ten Board of Directors in 2005 and is a long-term volunteer for Reel Affirmations. He has served as Operations and Marketing chairs and brings extensive festival operations background to the board.  In recent years he documented OIT policies for box office and ticketing operations and developed a volunteer manual. He spearheads the Reel Affirmations audience survey and chairs the board’s Technology Task Force. Scott earned a B.S. in Marketing from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and an M.A. in International Affairs from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He is a manager at Verizon Communications, where he conducts analysis of FiOS business operations with a focus on process assurance and improvement.

Chloe Cooney is a Senior Associate with the Endeavor Group, a strategic philanthropy advising firm that works with high net worth individuals, corporations and foundations to design and implement their major philanthropic efforts. In this role she manages client projects with a focus on international development advocacy and implementation.
Prior to joining Endeavor, Chloe managed the Executive Office of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC), a coalition of over 200 companies with interest in supporting global health efforts. At GBC she coordinated the organization's strategic planning process, managed the activities of its Board of Directors and planned large-scale events. She began her career in the film industry when she managed operations and developed new projects for Peirce Pictures, the production company of filmmaker Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry, Stop Loss) in New York and Los Angeles.
Chloe graduated Summa Cum Laude from Barnard College, Columbia University and was awarded a year-long leadership fellowship with New York University's Wagner School of Public Service. She speaks about philanthropy on panels and professional conferences, has presented at numerous academic conferences as an independent scholar focusing on U.S. LGBT history, and has served on the Executive Committee for the Barnard Center for Research on Women.

Lisa is a commodity manager with Hewlett-Packard Company, working in the Services Americas Regional Operations procurement organization supporting the Federal Government. Lisa is responsible for negotiating service agreements with third party subcontractors that team with HP on large government opportunities. She has been with HP for 23 years, holding different positions along the way. She and her partner, Julie Coons, reside in the Tenlytown area of Washington, DC. Lisa supports Equality Maryland, Victory Fund, and Mautner, and was a volunteer for One In Ten before joining the board.  She is a member of Ward 3 Vision, a neighborhood smart growth organization.  Lisa is a native Washingtonian.  She grew up in Mt. Rainier, MD, and attended the University of Maryland, College Park.

Paul is the Manager of Meetings and Programs for the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). He is part of the team that is responsible for planning, promoting, and executing the signature events of the Chamber. Paul joined the Chamber after spending two seasons with The Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington. As Company Manager, Paul was responsible for customer service efforts to the acting companies and other artists, including contracting, travel and housing arrangements, and hospitality.
Prior to moving to Washington in 2006, Paul lived in Indianapolis, IN, working for the Indiana Repertory Theatre as their Company Manager for seven years. It was in Indiana that Paul discovered his talents for meetings and events while working with the Waldo M. and Grace C. Bonderman Playwriting for Youth National Symposium, a workshop devoted to creating new plays for young people, and The New Harmony Project, whose signature event is a 2-week conference for writers for stage and screen held in the beautiful town of New Harmony, Indiana.
A native Iowan, Paul holds a BA from Simpson College with a double major in Theatre Arts and German. While at Simpson, Paul was fortunate to spend a semester living in Schorndorf, Germany, living with a fantastic host family and learning the German language, culture, sights, and of course, beer. He maintains a strong connection with the Simpson College Community as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
As a past volunteer for One In Ten, he is happy to be part of the successes of the Walk the Red Carpet Gala and Reel Affirmations 17, and is thrilled to be on the Board of Directors for such an important part of the LGBT tapestry in the Washington, DC, community!
If Paul had a million dollars, he would travel and buy beachfront property (OK, maybe two million dollars). In reality, he enjoys spending time with friends over drinks and dinners, relaxing with a cup of coffee, watching movies, and learning about the antics of his 2-year-old niece Grace.

Claire became Executive Director of the Arlington Arts Center in August 2005, after serving as the Program Director. Prior to joining the AAC, Claire was the Director of Target Gallery, the national exhibition space in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA. Simultaneously, she worked as the Community Liaison for the 30 year-old center, coordinating a national conference on starting community art centers in 2004 and liaising with a variety of arts groups and advocacy organizations. In the late 90s, Claire served as managing curator of Washington’s Duncan & Miller Gallery, a contemporary art space featuring the work of emerging artists.
In addition to her work in arts administration, Claire has curated and juried numerous exhibitions throughout the Washington, D.C. area. She was selected to be a participating curator in the Visual Arts Initiative at the District of Columbia Arts Center, a program funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Her exhibition “Space of Change” (co-curated with sculptor Margaret Boozer) opened in September 2006 and was positively reviewed in the national publication Art Papers. She served on the Virginia Commission for the Arts Grants Review Panel (Area 4B) in 2006 and 2007, and was invited to return in 2008.
Claire is an adjunct professor in the Masters in Arts Management program at George Mason University, where she teaches Gallery Management. She is a member of ArtTable, a professional organization for female executives in the visual arts.
Claire received her Masters degree in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin and her undergraduate degree in Art History from the University of Michigan.

Melanie joins the One In Ten Board due in part to her love of cinema, her belief in film’s ability to deeply affect people and even change their minds about big issues and enrich their lives, and her desire to be involved in the local LGBT community. Melanie “came out” in her mid-40s (she is 50 but people tell her she doesn’t look it).  Reel Affirmations 15 in 2005 was a huge step for her as she had attended prior festivals as a “friend of gays,” but attending RA15 as an out VIP was an exclamation point in her overall process of proud self-awareness and open identification.
Melanie has a deep, though distant, background in marketing and sales, which explains her knack for getting her friends and family to join in the fun by donating to and volunteering for causes and organizations she believes in.  It is her hope that this skill will help One in Ten in meeting funding and volunteering goals.
She currently works as a Pediatric Radiologist at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington where she has been on staff since completing her Fellowship in Pediatric Radiology at CNMC in the Fall of 1995. Her position includes an appointment to George Washington University School of Medicine and Healthy Sciences as an Assistant Professor in Radiology and Pediatrics. Prior to her Fellowship, she was a Radiology Resident at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where she had attended medical school. She also holds a B.A. in Psychology, magna cum laude, from American University in Washington, D.C. Prior to that, she sold everything from insurance door-to-door to hotel supplies for Ramada Inns to advertising pages for everything from trade publications to The Washington Post. All other information pertaining to her activities needs be dragged out of her over a nice glass of Chardonnay or a pineapple-infused vodka at Logan Tavern.
She is a mother of two girls: Jamie Rose, 20, a Junior at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and Talia, a ninth-grader at Georgetown Day School in Washington. (Melanie carries pictures of them at all times, so all you need do is ask.) She has many cohorts in the community of “mommies who used to be married to men,” so if anybody knows somebody who needs some guidance in finding their way through this transition, it is an issue near and dear to Melanie’s heart and she knows who to talk to.
When she isn’t working hard at doctoring or mentoring or mommying, or pouring her energies into One in Ten, she can be found road biking the local roads, spinning at U Street Results, kayaking the Potomac, hiking a nearby trail or skiing the mountains of Utah, Colorado or Montana. In fact, she can be hard to find in the winter months.

Jeff has served in a variety of Leadership positions with several major Retail Companies in the US. His expertise is in the Merchandise Planning and Information Systems areas where he has managed the Sales, Inventory and Gross Profit components of Retail Financial operations. In addition, Jeff has served as Director of Guest Relations for a prominent South Beach Boutique Hotelier company where he revamped and spearheaded the launch of a new guest relations program and played a key role in opening up their newest hotel property. Jeff also has in depth experience in the Residential Real Estate market and holds real estate licenses in Virginia, DC and Pennsylvania. He currently works for the Smithsonian Business Ventures as Senior Planning Manager for the Retail Store operation and enjoys the Smithsonian and life in the Washington DC metropolitan area.
Originally from Akron, Ohio, Jeff graduated from Miami University in Oxford Ohio with a BS in Business Administration and a Major in Marketing and Decision Sciences. He has lived in Pittsburgh, PA; New York City; Dallas, TX; Miami Beach, FL; and, for the past 2 1/2 years, Washington. Having grown up with deaf parents, Jeff is fluent in American Sign Language and is very comfortable working with the deaf community in Washington. He also speaks some Spanish and French.
Jeff has traveled extensively throughout Europe, South America, Africa and the Middle East. Some of his favorite pastimes are eating out, theatre, traveling, music and current events. He is an avid GLBT film festival-goer and attends Film Festivals worldwide where he celebrates the diversity of the GLBT community.

Rick is director of communications at the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers, an association that supports over 4,000 foundations in every state.
Spanning 16 years of experience in communications, his background includes time as director of communications at the Center for Nonprofit Advancement in Washington, D.C.; seven years as a reporter and editor of new media at Congressional Quarterly; time as webmaster for major local airports; and in management of nonprofit organizations. Rick is responsible for Forum communications, including print and electronic publications, media relations, vendor and design management, internal communications, and branding. His writing has appeared in The Advocate, The Washington Blade, and Q Magazine.
Rick graduated from Grinnell College with a degree in Russian, and is currently enrolled in a master's program in communications at Johns Hopkins University in D.C.
Having lived in D.C. since 1989, he has volunteered at many organizations, including NGLTF, Whitman-Walker Clinic, and other community-based groups. He has volunteered for the Reel Affirmations Film Festival since the early 1990s, including helping with film selection, marketing, operations and management; served five years as the program guide editor; founded and managed the Laugh Out Loud comedy series; and has served on the board of One In Ten since 1998, including past service on the executive committee and as board president in 2007. He's especially fond of good chocolate, good wine, good food, a good joke, and great movies.

Robert is the President and owner of LOGOmotion Inc., an advertising specialty and promotional products company headquartered in Bethesda Maryland. In addition to his board work with One In Ten, Robert has served as President and Chair of the Board of PEN, The Metro DC LGBT Chamber of Commerce, and continues as an Emeritus member. After graduated from the Horace Mann Prep school in New York City, he went on to earn a BS-E from The Wharton School-University of Pennsylvania. Robert and his partner Joe Phillips reside in the District of Columbia.

Margaret Murray, the new Executive Director of One in Ten, comes to Washington, DC, by way of Florida, where for two years she was Executive Director for the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
She successfully launched KidFlix, Tampa’s first children’s film festival, and has also programmed festivals for various cultural institutions, includiung the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, FL as co-director of Cinema of Agitation: Eastern Surrealism in Film.
She is the owner of Movies That Move, an award-winning roving cinema showcase that pair site specific film screenings in out of the way and unlikely locales.
Prior to moving to Washington, DC., she was Communications Director for the Arts Center, a contemporary arts facility in St. Petersburg, FL., where she worked extensively on a partnership between glass artist Dale Chihuly and the Arts Center to create Florida’s first arts-anchored residential development.
A life-long supporter and patron of the arts, Murray was the Amsterdam based European Label Manager for Knitting Factory Records, a New York avant-garde jazz label, as well as the General Manager for the highly successful Madstone Theatre Tampa, an art-house cinema, lounge and gallery space.

BLAIRE POSTMAN’s career includes  positions in the Talent Representation industry with The Second City, Washington Speakers Bureau and the William Morris Agency. 
She was a Talent Manager & Live Event Producer with Rain Management Group's New York office, and is also the founder and Executive Producer of the annual dccomedyfest.
Blaire received her B.A. & J.D. degrees from Washington & Lee University.  She is admitted to the Bars of New York, New Jersey and Washington, DC.

For six years through Laugh Out Loud, One In Ten has featured wonderful performers who illuminate our lives from their own special point of view. And it has been hilarious.
Each perspective – gay, lesbian, Latin lesbian, Jewish lesbian, Jewish gay, gay acting like southern belle – each one makes us look at our lives differently, and laugh.

Plant a Seed

Growing Voices, Growing Visions
Now in its seventh year, the Plant A Seed grant program cultivates and encourages new gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered filmmakers by providing funds to finance their next feature projects.
Although many festivals award filmmakers with dollars for their latest films, Reel Affirmations gives filmmakers a seed grant for their next project. The seed money can be used for any cost incurred while creating their next film.
Plant A Seed grant winners are selected by the Reel Affirmations programming staff for their potential to create challenging new works that will illuminate the experiences of the gay and lesbian community. This year's winner will be announced at the Reel Affirmations Closing Night Party, Saturday, October 21.
