Filmmaker
Pratibha Parmar (Warrior
Marks and Khush) received the
One In Ten Visionary Award in a ceremony
at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 12, prior to the screening of her latest film, Nina’s
Heavenly Delights at Reel Affirmations 17.
The Visionary Award, given to mid-career artists,
is meant to showcase the work of LGBT filmmakers who continue to strive
for excellence in cinematic technique while continuing to craft meaningful
stories of lgbt lives.
“One in Ten is honored to recognize Pratibha for her longstanding
commitment to celebrating the lives of women all over the world,” Margaret
Murray, executive director of One In Ten said. “In many instances,
Pratibha’s
films document the lives of women that many in the global power structure
wish would go away — women with a voice, with a vision and with
the strength of will to not sit silently while their struggles are ignored.”
Born in Nairobi, Kenya, and raised in London, Pratibha’s work
reflects her broad experiences, ranging from her studies at Bradford
and Birmingham Universities, to her work in India on rural development
projects (including three months in Calcutta with Mother Theresa). With
the publishing collective Sheba Feminist Press, Pratibha gave voice
to female writers from Asia and the Caribbean, and published the British
edition of The
Cancer Journals by Audre Lorde.
Bestowed upon mid-career filmmakers
who have navigated the vagaries of both independent filmmaking and the
studio system, the One in Ten Visionary Award honors
filmmakers not only for their past work but for the promise they hold
for the future.
