One In Ten is a non-profit 501(c)(3) membership-based organization. One In Ten is non-partisan, non-sectarian, and respects the diversity of backgrounds and ideologies of members of the gay and lesbian community.

Community Support is Our Greatest Strength

Now in its eight year, the Plant A Seed grant program is designed to cultivate and encourage new gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender films by providing early money to aspiring filmmakers for their next feature projects.

Grant recipients are chosen by the Reel Affirmations programming staff for their potential to create challenging new works that will illuminate the experiences of the gay and lesbian community.

Last year's winner was Carlos Portugal, director of East Side Story. This debut film, a moving portrait of the struggles experienced by neighbors, friends and lovers when an East LA neighborhood undergoes gentrification, has become a festival favorite. We look forward to seeing much more of Carlos’s work in the future and — with funding from Plant A Seed — he’s already begun work on a new film.

Reel Affirmations’ audiences support the Plant A Seed grant program with their generous donations through auctions, which One In Ten supplements with private gifts.

During Reel Affirmations 17, visit the front lobby of the Lincoln Theatre – One In Ten’s dedicated section for the Plant A Seed auction and check out the amazing artwork and donations from local businesses.
